Birds and bees

Monday, September 03, 2007

Hmm... our nine year old son began asking us about the bird and the bees. Isn't that too soon? I thought we won't have to deal with it for about a few more years. But I suppose at the rate we are going with the entertainment industry, the internet and the now more liberal stance in almost everything, it shouldn't be surprising.

  1. If he’s like my son it’s from reading his text book. I tried not to look too shocked when he used the real words for us gals. Thing was he didn’t want to know much just the facts and he had already read those. Now that he will be fourteen soon I may be explaining more stuff. I’d ask before giving too many facts out sometimes they only want a few questions answered.

That I think is good advise. I am still thinking how I should handle this. Maybe I will probe a little bit and take it from there.

  3. hi pearlie,

no, it is not too soon. Try to understand from his point of view. He hears a lot of stuff from his friends and see some on television and the movies.

It is good that he asks you. Understand what he is actually asking and give him facts that he can understand at his level. Speak of it matter-of-factly rather than being embarrassed.
