My thoughts on Proverbs 10

Monday, August 10, 2009

I worked out on Proverbs 10 today and whilst I find it repetitive, there are some interesting things I noticed about it. I may be wrong but:

1. Every verse is a comparison between the good and the bad, the righteous and the wicked with regards to their actions and consequences except for v.10, 18, 22 and 26.
2. Verse 10, 18 and 26 are presented negatively, whereas v.26 is presented positively.
3. These four verses looks like summaries of the sections, with v.22 being the gist of the whole passage.

Proverbs 10
The proverbs of Solomon.

v.THE TWO PERSONSCONSEQUENCE
1wise son/foolish son gladness/sorrow to parents
2wickedness/righteousnessno profit/delivers
3righteous/wickednot go hungry/cravings thwarted
4slack hand/hand of the diligent poverty/richness
5who gathers/who sleeps prudent/shame
6righteous/wickedblessings/violence
7righteous/wickedblessed memory/rotted name

10 Whoever winks the eye causes trouble, but a babbling fool will come to ruin.

11righteous/wickedlife/violence
12hatred/love stirs up strife/covers all offenses
13understanding/senselesswisdom/rod
14wise/foolknowledge/ruin
15rich/poorwealth/ruin
16righteous/wickedlife/sin

18 The one who conceals hatred has lying lips, and whoever utters slander is a fool.

19many words/lips restrained transgression/prudence
20righteous/wickedchoice silver/little worth
21righteous/foolsfeed many/die

22 The blessing of the LORD makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.

23fool/understanding joke/wisdom
24wicked/righteousdreads/fulfilment
25wicked/righteousno more/forever

26 Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to those who send him.

27fear the Lord/wicked life prolonged/short
28righteous/wickedjoy/perish
29blameless/evildoersstronghold/destruction
30righteous/wickednever be removed/not dwell in the land
31righteous/perversewisdom/cut off
32righteous/wickedacceptable/perverse

Verse 22 sounds a bit odd to me until I noticed a footnote in the ESV bible. It may read, "The blessing of the LORD makes rich, and toil adds nothing to it", which makes more sense. It concludes that blessings that come from God is complete, nothing we add onto it will make any difference. And that blessings can only be given to the righteous and blameless.

  1. Great comparisons Pearlie. I penned my thoughts on Proverbs 10 a few weeks ago here.. but it doesn't look like you copied any of it :)
