Preaching on Mother's Day

Saturday, January 30, 2010

I have just agreed to my pastor's request to preach on Mother's Day. But oh boy, is that going to be a challenge. I don't know - most Mother's Day sermons I have heard goes along the lines of either "kids, honour your mother and you better do this and that" or a whole list of things a mother should be according to Proverbs 31, both of which I am not so inclined to take up.

What do you think? What can one preach on on Mother's Day?
I have till May 9 to work on it.

  1. One of the most soul searching scriptures for me, especially as a mother is: "But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart." Luke 2:19

  2. In line with what Susan commented I might suggest something through the eyes of Mary. Either way I know that you will do a great job. Hope it is captured on audio or video.

  4. Susan, KB,
I have been thinking about your suggestions in the past 2 days on suggestions. I love your reference of Mary, Susan. Right after publishing the post, I thought it might be good to look at all the examples of the mothers in the bible -- I don't think many were mentioned -- of hand Mary, Naomi ... can't think of anymore :)

Another option also came to mind - the challenge of motherhood in this internet generation ... I thought me being quite an internet savvy mom with a VERY internet savvy son, I might be able to address what Christian mothering is and should be in this age. I don't know ... what do you think?

My question will obviously be - what have you preached on mother day before? :)

  10. I just ask that whatever you choose to say you consider the women who may not have been blessed to be mothers. We mostly hear about fertility success stories but there are many who did not succeed. I know that I avoided church on Mother's Day for many years.

I am sure you will share the words God wants you to share.

'the unnamed mother' -- interesting, I'll look it up. At this moment, I have no idea what it holds :)

  13. Hi Heidi,
Thanks for the reminder - the thought did cross my mind but you made it more concrete that I should be mindful of it. There are some in our community who are without child. I will include that in my prayer. Thanks again!

  15. There was once a pastor took a passage from the OT, the one where Hagar and Ishmael got kicked out, desperately surviving and how God listened to the mother's cry ... well, something along that line.
